Excalibur
Originally released: 1981
After Monty Python And The Holy Grail, it's hard to take the Arthurian legends seriously, but John Boorman's epic just about pulls it off. Nicol Williamson's Merlin holds it together, with his OTT performance pushing the film beyond camp, beyond parody, and somehow back into the authentically mythic. The other actors aren't as good - especially the bland 1980s leads (Terry, Lunghi, Clay) - but as long as you enter into the spirit of the film, it's unusually rewarding, with some visually stunning set-pieces of magic and battle. Flawed, but touched by brilliance.
