Zardoz
Originally released: 1973
Boorman's oddest film; Connery's too; even Rampling's - and she had sex with a chimp in Max Mon Amour. Zardoz is, undeniably, very odd indeed - but it's curiously compelling, and deserves a cult following. A future society is split into the Vortex (an elite of powerful yet impotent immortals) and the Brutals (everyone else). Connery, a Brutal, infiltrates the Vortex, where the mere sight of Rampling gives him a hard-on. Destruction and philosophy follow. There's a giant floating head which looks like Zeus, and references to The Wizard Of Oz. Such is Boorman's skill with imagery, there are times when it all makes sense; and even when it doesn't, it scarcely matters.
