Richard Lester's spirited Beatles quasi-documentary launched a
thousand videos a generation later, with its energetic cross-cutting
set to songs like Can't Buy Me Love and She Loves You. The backstage
capers consist mainly of japes with the management and Paul's
curmudgeonly Irish grandfather (played by Wilfrid Brambell). Alun
Owen's shrewd script captures the witty, unpretentious and cheerily
subversive talents of the pre-experimentation Fab Four, who prove
self-effacingly adept at playing themselves.
