It's a mystery how this gets away with a combination of smarminess and
schmaltz, but it does. Cruise is frequently OTT as the sports agent
who's fired after writing a lengthy memo on how the profession should
clean itself up. He is left with one client, the invariably OTT Gooding,
whose whooping and dancing when he won the supporting actor Oscar must
keep Spike Lee awake at night. The not-fully-requited love Cruise
inspires in Zellweger is an unusual plus, but her mannered performance
isn't.
