Renée Zellweger
Born: 1969
Like most acquired tastes, this one gets addictive after a while. She was unfamiliar and off-putting in Jerry Maguire – her self-consciousness was something that she didn't seem to have earned yet. En route to Bridget Jones stardom, she's done hard time as a love interest (The Bachelor; Me, Myself And Irene), triumphed as Nurse Betty (an incredibly tricky role), and excelled less ostentatiously as the sensitive centre of One True Thing – probably her most complete, believable bit of acting to date. Now that we've got to know her better she's magic: she gets you on her side, and you stay there.
