The best romantic comedy of its decade. The strengths of this
world-conquering Britflick are so great - Grant's star turn as the
lovestruck but commitment-shy Charles, Richard Curtis's
laugh-out-loud-funny dialogue; Newell's spot-on direction, which
guides us smoothly from high comedy to pathos and back again - it hardly
matters if imported love-object Andie MacDowell spends the film
looking as if she's on the wrong set. But the other supporting
characters are fully integrated and played to a tee, which makes it easy
to swallow the notion that the love lives of these sexy rich folk
actually matter.
