A failure as a thriller, Anthony Minghella's lavish, ambitious
adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's pulp classic compensates in other
ways. In a miraculous cast, Matt Damon contributes easily his best
performance yet as the insecure, sexually neurotic young man who falls
dangerously in love with the Mediterranean lifestyle when sent to
retrieve Dickie (Jude Law) from his languorous, monied existence.
