A rather bloated Gallic stab at sci-fi from France’s enfant terrible
Luc Besson, The Fifth Element has a platinum-barneted Bruce Willis
saving the eponymous Milla Jovovich and thus the world. Plenty of
famous faces in support, including the venerable Ian Holm, with Chris
Tucker giving a performance akin to fingernails down a blackboard. The
effects and set-pieces are large and kinetic, as you would expect from
Besson, but the tone falls somewhere between funny and po-faced and
thus is neither. Overall fun, but a defiantly ragged affair.
