The 39 Steps
Originally released: 1935
Brilliantly constructed hatchet job on John Buchan's rollicking tale. Hannay, now Canadian and wry, really engages as he scoots round the Highlands pursued by the suitably inane police and the odd vague spy. There's some sado-masochistic romance, too, courtesy of prim blonde Pamela, who finds herself handcuffed to the hero. Essentially North By Northwest lite, and with support from stars like John Laurie (Dad's Army's Frazer) in an early sinister crofting role.
