Svankmajer's tribute to the Marquis de Sade, Freud and their
respective explorations of the human psyche's darkest corners. A
group of average Czech citizens silently interact in their humdrum
everyday lives, but, secretly, each one is preparing to enter their
fetishistic, sado-masochistic or just plain bizarre fantasy worlds.
Although the Sade tag may suggest pornographic content, this is no peep
show, but a challenging celebration of the dark pleasures of the
imagination. For those who find the range of perversions on display
disturbing rather than celebratory, Svankmajer's savage wit and
accomplished animation will provide ample compensation.
