Starts with a magical scene of a man miming the solar system, and ends
with the destruction of an asylum, filmed in real time in one continuous
15-minute take. In between these two mesmerising episodes, Tarr's
portentous / pretentious air can quickly become stifling. No doubt
that he's got an eye - there are moments of bleak poetry, like the dead eye
of whale - but there are also ponderous longeurs which stretch the
patience, metaphors which feel extended beyond breaking point. Not
one for the uncommitted.
