For a time the wunderkind of commercial cinema, Burton burst onto the
world stage with his skewed visuals and his perverse, quirky outlook
bounding up to moviegoers like a one-eyed re-animated puppy. Pee-Wee
Herman, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood are
included in his parade of misfits, with regular contributors Paul
Reubens, Michael Keaton and Johnny Depp providing the spiky
alter-egos. Lately his gothic sensibility has felt strained in Sleepy
Hollow and his humour heavy-handed in Mars Attacks! His talents are in
animation and reinvention, so let's hope he can reinvent his style
before it descends into narcissistic cliché.
