The best of Bruce Lee's Hong Kong films, this nationalistic tale of
saving Chinese face against Japanese oppression contains Bruce's
most moving performance as well as some incredible martial arts
displays. This film, perhaps more than any other, manages to weave its
characters, narrative and kung-fu organically together - everything
is integral to the story, and so is far more satisfying than the
"whoops, I've tripped into a fight again" school of kung-fu
flick. At the centre of everything is heartfelt Chinese woe over
self-determination for their country. Lee is a mountain of skill,
prowess and poise. The Jackie Chan-starring sequel is far, far
inferior.
