Another technical tour-de-force from the director of Pi. Here,
Aronofsky's genius is harnessed to that of Hubert Selby Jr for a bleaker
street-level vision of New York. No privileges of genius for Harry
(Leto), a small-time heroin dealer, or his mother Sara (Burstyn), a TV
addict. Modest happiness threatens: Sara gets an application to
appear on a gameshow and begins to lose weight; Harry is making money,
enough to start a small business with his girlfriend Marion
(Connelly). But it all goes horribly wrong. And the wronger it gets, the
better the performances. Two word review: tough shit.
