Pauline Kael said that it "may be the best movie of its kind ever
made"; Variety that it "validates the entire concept of
remakes." Damn right. A magnificently queasy and accomplished
update of Don Siegel’s 1956 classic, this is, frankly, much more fun
than the original and just gets better on each viewing. Sutherland is
the health inspector gradually twigging that the people of San
Francisco are being replaced by alien doppelgängers. It gets too
hysterical too soon, perhaps, but performances of exquisite paranoia
and the surreally vivid look of the thing make for a delirious, whirling
entertainment.
