This was where Wenders' long decline of the 1990s set in. A sci-fi road
movie spanning the entire globe was always in danger of over-reaching
itself, and though likeable and inventive, it stretches the patience.
William Hurt plays a scientist on the run, whose invention enables
blind people to see, and dreams to be recorded. There are spooky
moments, clever ideas and quirky humour, but it doesn't quite hang
together as a whole; the half-baked plot often seems like an excuse for
another glamorous location shoot. As ever with Wenders, though, there
are moments of visual brilliance, and the soundtrack is superb.
