A whimsical fairytale comedy that is, well, whimsical and funny.
Reiner directs Patinkin, Elwes and Wright with a deft, light touch, and
the film floats by as easily as the procession of comedy cameos from
Shawn, Guest, Billy Crystal and Chris Sarandon. Fred Savage plays a
sick kid being read the eponymous fairytale by his wizened
grandfather, Peter Falk. Pirates, giants, princes, princesses,
kidnaps, revenge and buckling of swashes abound, and while it's
ultimately wafer-thin, it charms and tickles your funny bone enough to
be a welcome diversion. Adapted from sage scribe William Goldman's
book.
