All the elements of The Matrix are here in this earlier Wachowski film:
the black-and-white palette, slow-motion shots with exaggerated
sound, complex conspiracy plot where the drama arises from human
relations. In this case, very close relations, between gangster’s
moll Tilly and ex-con Gershon, hired as caretaker by Tilly’s neurotic
boyfriend. From sultry glances to explicit sex, the lesbian
relationship binds the film together as the girls test their love in an
audacious heist – but do we really need Gershon tied up in a closet to get
the message? Style over content, but I’m content.
