Jeremy Irons is superb as the Mantle brothers in Cronenberg's study of
the symbiotic relationship between identical twins. The camerawork
seamlessly meshes Irons as both characters into virtually every
scene, with each twin clearly delineated. When Genevieve Bujold
enters the fray, Cronenberg steers the trio sensitively but
unavoidably towards the catastrophe that awaits. He avoids needless
shocks, but delivers horrific imagery with gusto and the necessary
insight. A psychological thriller par excellence.
