Raimi goes so far in the direction of sensitivity and restraint with
this tautly compelling thriller that there are moments when you’d
quite like him to indulge himself, a la Evil Dead, with an insanely
accelerating zoom shot at ground level. But you’d be wrong. A Simple
Plan works slowly, cumulatively, and everything in it matters. It’s
not remotely cool – just cold as hell, in snowy Minnesota, as brothers
Hank (Paxton) and Jacob (the astonishing Thornton) find $4.4 million
in a crashed plane and decide to keep it.
