Touching tale of hitman meets prepubescent girl. It sounds like a Daily
Star scoop, but somehow Besson's film is both troubling and tender. 12
year-old Mathilda’s family is murdered by a bent cop, so she hooks up
with a loner who kills people for a living. Jean Reno, as 'the cleaner',
is under-stated and charming; Gary Oldman, as the fucked-up cop, deals
drugs, slaughters families and pops pills. A very young Natalie
Portman is enchanting as the young wannabe assassin. It shouldn't
work, but somehow it redefines the term 'buddy movie'.
