Scott's post-feminist road movie is already dated and unconvincing
because it favours easy inversions over actual dissection of sexual
politics. So Brad Pitt is the dumb blond one night stand, and Michael
Madsen a prodigal wife to Davis and Sarandon respectively.
Christopher MacDonald, meanwhile, is saddled with pure cliche as
Davis' apoplectic, pizza-guzzling thug of a husband. Still, the lead
performances are very appealing, and there's certainly a kick of
nihilistic exhilaration in the famous cliff-edge finale, however
neat the closure it provides.
