A beautifully observed and under-stated story about living and loving
in London today. Avoiding all the usual clichés of Britfilm -
not a gangster, cheeky Cockney or buttoned-up Victorian in sight -
Thraves gives us a city that actually looks like the one we know, peopled
with characters we might meet in it. His intuitive, freewheeling style
has the freshness you'd expect of a debut, but also a deep sense of cinema
- references to French New Wave and Fassbinder abound. On this form,
he's up there with Lynne Ramsay and Shane Meadows.
