Wonderland aims to capture the exhilaration and isolation, the buzz
and come-down, the chance encounters and missed connections that make
up a day in the life of late 1990s London. Borrowing a few tricks from
Dogme95, it's all grainy textures, jerky cameras and weird colours,
heightening the sense of the city as a shifting, unstable entity in
itself. Unfortunately, Winterbottom doesn't borrow Dogme's
original story ideas, bruising emotional honesty or vicious humour.
Though his London looks real, the narratives he plays out within it are
standard soap opera fare. There's enough to keep you watching, but it
feels like a lost opportunity.
