Deeply unsettling film about a released prisoner (Plummer) wandering
the desolate motorway system of Northern England. She takes up with a
cashier (Reeves) from a petrol station where she shoplifts, and the two
begin a murderous hitch-hike through steel towns, motels and truck
cabs. Plummer seduces the backward Reeves, revealing an impressively
twisted side to her talent – and some equally astonishing body
jewellery. Winterbottom does nothing to alleviate the flickering
fluorescent-strip gloominess of the affair, using Plummer's amoral
and unmotivated violence to serve as a dark fairytale about the urban
badlands of England. Utterly un-American take on the trail-of-bodies
road movie.
