Andersson's debut, A Swedish Love Story, set up a promising career
which almost ended with his follow-up, Giliap (1975). Though compared
by some to Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, it was a box office catastrophe,
making back only 5% of its budget. Bankrupt and out in the cold,
Andersson made 300 commercials in the next 20 years, slowly rebuilding
his resources, honing his unique personal style, and establishing his
own production company to enable him to work freely once again. Songs
From The Second Floor is his comeback, and well worth the wait, sharing a
Special Jury Prize at Cannes with Samira Makhmalbaf's Blackboards.
