Hollywood likes plane crashes, and it likes people who survive them
even more. It also likes journalists, especially ones with a human
interest story. When journalist Geena Davis is saved from a plane crash
by petty thief Dustin Hoffman (still riding high from Rain Man
success), the hunt is on. Have his random acts of kindness cancelled out
his previous amoral behaviour? Will she fall for him? (or on him, given
their difference in height?) Hardly a marriage made in heaven –
Shyamalan's reworking of the material in Unbreakable is more
interesting, if equally po-faced.
