After the success of My Beautiful Laundrette, Working Title and
Channel Four were keen to capitalise on the current sex appeal of
poster-boy Hanif Kureishi. This inter-racial love story, based on his
novel, seemed the best way to go. Crossover cast members, as well as
Frears' direction, give the two films a surface similitude, but cannot
disguise the thin material. Perhaps worth seeing for the bizarre
appearance by Roland Gift (remember Fine Young Cannibals?) Kureishi
is still peddling the same material today. Frears, thankfully, is not.
