One of Lang's best movies, with Robinson superb as the conservative,
conventional hero whose repressed desires are fulfilled when he meets
Bennett's femme fatale and becomes embroiled in a web of crime,
concealment and deception. Fate closes in with implacable force, but
this is somehow one of the director's tenderest and most humane films,
extending a deep sympathy to decent characters caught in a tightening
trap. Indeed, the trick ending, often dismissed as a cheat, comes as
something of a relief. An intense, gripping thriller, seasoned with
wit and charm.
