Zhang's peculiar spin on Titanic. In the past, two would-be lovers in a
village are separated by shadowy political forces from the city; in the
present, their son returns home to bury his father. The contrast is
marked by changing between lyrical colour and stark black & white.
It's rather more sentimental and unsubtle than you'd expect from
Zhang, particularly the syrupy music, but it's hard not to be moved by
this parable about the need for patience and perseverance - especially
when you consider he made it after stewing out a lengthy ban.
