Modern Iranian cinema begins with Dariush Mehrjui. Before his 1968
classic The Cow, Iranian movies were either musicals, melodramas or
‘tough guy' action flicks. Mehrjui introduced realism, symbolism,
and the sensibilities of international art cinema. You can see the
influence of Rosselini, De Sica and Satyajit Ray, but he also added
something distinctively Iranian, in the process starting one of the
greatest modern film waves. He's never quite lived up to that early
promise, but with the rise of Kiarostami, Makhmalbaf and the rest,
Mehrjui's place in cinema history is assured.
