A miraculous star vehicle which Roberts rides in top gear – she and
Soderbergh turn a basic David and Goliath crowd-pleaser into
something special. So does Finney, whose role as Ed Masry, the
small-time lawyer Roberts insults a job out of, provides him with a
series of disarming opportunities to be gruff with a heart of gold.
Richly funny and poignant, it's admittedly simplistic in its stance
towards corporate trampling on the little people. But who cares? A
defiant, near-perfect demonstration of mass audience moviemaking
with heart, brain and soul.
