The biggest movie of all time is probably Cameron's worst (yes, that
includes Piranha 2). The first half concentrates on the brief love
affair of DiCaprio and Winslet, before getting on with the business in
hand of sinking the eponymous floating hubris. The sinking is
breathtakingly staged, Cameron flexing his showman muscles, but what
precedes it is laboured, poorly written mush that manages to simplify
the class politics of the period while making Love Story seem
positively deep. Undoubtedly a fabulous piece of direction, but an
equally pitiful example of by-the-numbers screenwriting.
