It doesn't sound promising: two men meet, travel together without
talking much, then part ways. But Kings Of The Road is a landmark for the
road movie genre, the New German Cinema, and director Wim Wenders'
career. Unfolding in what feels like real time, it's full of space -
whether the rolling roads and open horizons Wenders transposes from
Hollywood westerns to post-war Germany, or the room he gives the viewer
to reflect on characters, environment and their connections,
culminating in the classic line: "The Americans have colonised
our sub-conscious." A subtle, under-stated, thoughtful film,
it resonates long after it's over.
