Am I the only person who thinks Conrad should have stuck to sailing? This
adaptation attempts to reach the parts Apocalypse Now ignored
(faithfulness to the book, Africa, colonialism), and ends up looking
less a labour of love than an earnest Discovery Channel docu-drama
about the wonders of the Congo. Malkovich looks exceedingly silly as
monkey-strangler Kurtz, and Roth does his 'I'm just a bloke, me' act for
Marlow. But it helped me through the A-Level, which is more than I can say
for Coppola.
