Grand Guignol operatic horror. Cronenberg's reworking of the 1950s
classic re-focuses on the gradual transmogrification of Jeff
Goldblum's idealistic scientist into the aberration that is the
mutated Brundlefly. More tragedy than shocker, Cronenberg
nonetheless pulls no punches and shows us the explicit and gory process
that Goldblum undergoes. Difficult to watch because Cronenberg
invests so much sympathy in Goldblum's scientific endeavour that you
want him to succeed, but are always aware of the horrors to come.
Brilliant.
