Mars Attacks!
Originally released: 1996
After the commercial failure of Ed Wood, Burton attempted to return with this maliciously wicked adaptation of the 1950s trading cards. A huge, star-filled cast is led, in Peter Sellers style, by Jack Nicholson in three roles, including the US President, but Tom Jones wins most affection as himself. It's basically one big cartoon and doesn't stand up to repeat viewings, but damn, is it funny the first time round. Shallow and nasty, this is Beetlejuice without the soul, and the American public voted with their flag, flocking away from it to the po-faced jingoism of Independence Day.
