A modern fairytale soaked in Tim Burton's own particular brand of
fantasy, Edward Scissorhands is a gorgeously realised if slight story
of a lonely boy (Depp) with scissors for hands, wrenched into
pastel-coloured, malignant American suburbia. Only the beautiful
Winona Ryder sees him for what he truly is. The suburbia is reminiscent
of David Lynch, but Burton never descends into an underworld, content
to let his simple, often simpering characters float around in his
whimsical dreamworld. Charming and coy, this is arguably Burton's
most personal work to date.
