A socio-political drama based on one of the most infamous scandals in
baseball history, the throwing of the 1919 World Series, and the
corruption and divisions within the sport that came to light during the
subsequent investigation. Perfect material for director John Sayles
to explore his interest in "multiple character pieces about
communities of people and the kind of social dynamics that exist in
groups", and to highlight the dishonourable underlife of an
all-American institution. The characteristic complexity and
insight of Sayles' approach attracted Cusack to the role of Buck
Weaver, a player unwilling to cheat but unwilling to denounce his
team-mates.
