As current teen comedies become ever cruder, this is, thankfully,
old-fashioned in comparison; in tone more like Frank Capra's road
comedy It Happened One Night than American Pie. In one of Cusack's
earliest films, he plays Walter "Gib" Gibson, an eastern
Ivy League college boy en route to see his buddy Lance in California and
score with the blonde who Lance promises is a "sure thing".
Hitching a lift in the same car is Alison, diametrically opposed in
character to Gib, and travelling to see her boring boyfriend. The
antagonism between the pair is poor disguise for an underlying mutual
attraction... Predictable, but sweetly charming.
