With his first Hollywood film, Boorman injected European style and
existentialism into American pulp fiction, years before Coppola,
Scorsese or Tarantino. Walker (Marvin) seems to be a gangster on the
trail of revenge, but could equally be a murderous spirit, or a dying
fantasy. Tantalising ambiguity fills every shot; Walker's world is
constantly shifting, unstable, never to be trusted. The costumes and
sets, the tricksy structure, the bleached-out vision of LA, with its
stunning skyscraper shots - all are part of Boorman's greatest vision,
a Sixties classic, never bettered.
