Grosse Pointe Blank
Originally released: 1997
A caustic black comedy which Cusack co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in as Martin Blank. He's a contract killer who goes to his high school reunion in Grosse Pointe, Michigan because he has a hit to carry out in Detroit the same weekend, without reckoning on the alarming discovery that he can no longer reconcile his professional life with his personal life. An ultra-smart script and sharp pace ensure this is extremely funny, engaging entertainment, which highlights the disparity between youthful ideals and subsequent reality. A characteristically wonderful performance by John's sister Joan as Blank's super-efficient secretary adds further class.
