Meadows is one of Britain's best young directors, part of a promising
generation that includes Lynne Ramsay and Jamie Thraves. His films
combine broad humour with down-to-earth realism, mixing minor
transgression with big-hearted compassion, all grounded in everyday
life on the margins of the Midlands, where he grew up. A failure at
school, he made 33 shorts by the age of 25; the best known is Smalltime.
His first feature, TwentyFourSeven, wasn't quite as good, but with the
magnificent A Room For Romeo Brass, Meadows delivered big-time -
except at the box office, where no-one noticed it. But he'll keep going,
and one day, he'll get his due.
