Whether it's morning sun coming through a gauze curtain, or the drip of
blood onto ice cream, Ramsay's world is alive with light and forms,
colours and shapes; she finds beauty in the most mundane - or tragic - of
circumstances. Lyrical and grim, in the tradition of Terence Davies,
Bill Douglas and Bresson, her first 3 shorts showed a fully-formed,
intensely visual sensibility, thanks partly to her regular
film-school collaborators, especially editor Lucia Zucchetti. Her
debut feature, Ratcatcher, was one of the films of the 1990s and the most
electrifying (if under-played) of debuts. Since then, Ramsay's
cropped her hair, dyed it red, and is working on another feature,
Morvern Callar.
