The Australian outback. A buttoned-up, English teenage girl and her
kid brother are running from their crazed father, pale skins scorching
in the desert sun. They're saved by a young aborigine on Walkabout, who
leads them back to their people, to his own cost. Onto this slight tale,
Roeg projects the struggle between civilisation and nature - asking
which is more savage, which is more true. His answers might strike you as
glib, bearing the stamp of the times, but the power of his shimmering
imagery and editing haven't dated, and neither has the blossoming
sexuality he coaxes from his young cast.
