Forman's are the films of an outsider. His heroes are non-conformists
who shake up or are destroyed by a hostile world, in the process exposing
its unspoken taboos. The theme runs through from his work in the 1960's -
when he was a leading figure in the Czech New Wave, winning art-house
acclaim with sharply observed realist comedies like A Blonde In Love -
to his Oscar-winning success in Hollywood. This outsider
sensibility, along with rigorously high professional standards,
keeps his work fresh and his edge sharp, however mainstream his remit
becomes. All his films are worth a look; Cuckoo's Nest remains his best.
