Red Sorghum
Originally released: 1987
Zhang Yimou's directorial debut is a raw, rebellious, visually arresting celebration of the expression of personal desire. In a Chinese province in the 1920's, a young woman is promised in an arranged marriage to an old leper. Far from passive, en route to the wedding she boldly returns the lascivious gaze of one of the sedan bearers, and later, defying convention, she submits to a passionate enactment of their desire. Gong Li is a revelation, and the camera consistently favours her point-of-view - according her a voice in a society in which women were frequently denied one.
