Best living director in the world? Zhang is a contender, and certainly
the greatest of China's Fifth Generation. Starting out as a
photographer, he moved on to cinematography for classmate Chen Kaige -
and finally, with Red Sorghum, to directing. His key film is Raise The
Red Lantern, a stunning drama of pride, power and betrayal - recurrent
themes in his work. Zhang's is a pure kind of cinema, based on looks and
gestures, saturated with colour and awash with passionate,
dream-like imagery. He has half a dozen classics under his belt, all
delirious with the possibilities of film; if not for censorship, it
might have been more.
