Set in the back streets of Tehran, The Apple tells the true story of twin
girls who were locked up at home until the age of 12 by their blind mother
and unemployed father. It begins when the twins are released into
daylight for the first time, barely able to communicate, and follows
their introduction to the outside world. 18 year-old director Samira
Makhmalbaf somehow persuaded everyone involved to re-enact the
story. Lying somewhere between fiction, documentary and therapy,
this is a totally absorbing film that draws you into its world, for at its
core is the universal question: what does it mean to be human?
