Prince of Darkness
Originally released: 1987
Satan is discovered in the basement of a disused church, in the form of a large vial of bubbling green liquid, and infects whoever gets too close. A really awful mix of religious mumbo-jumbo and zombie action, this long outstays its meagre welcome, with some very tedious exposition, dull performances and inert suspense. Shockingly bad for John Carpenter, even compared with the very ropiest of his earlier movies, and a real indication of decline. Even Donald Pleasence is defeated by the stilted literariness of the dialogue, and your wakefulness certainly will be.
